Discover the rich history of Redondo Beach Center for Spiritual Living, dating back to 1947. From its inception at the Masonic Temple to its present iconic location, the center remains a beacon of spiritual enlightenment rooted in Science of Mind philosophy. Learn more at redondocsl.org/our-center. OUR STORY The Redondo Beach Center for Spiritual Living has a rich history that dates back to 1947. The church's first services took place at the Masonic Temple on Ruby Street in Redondo Beach, with twelve members and a pastor named Dr. A. Schultz. In 1948, Dr. Schultz relocated to Los Angeles, prompting the charter members to search for a new pastor. They ultimately selected Dr. Earl D. Barnum, affectionately called "Barney," who quickly became beloved by the congregation. Under Dr. Barnum's leadership, the church experienced growth and in 1961, they moved to their current location on Knob Hill. The initial building on Knob Hill consisted of Richelieu Hall and the Kitchen. However, as the church expanded, the need for dedicated space for their children became evident. Thus, the Youth Center was constructed in early 1962 as an extension of the existing Hall, which served as the Sanctuary. After serving the church for several years, Dr. Barnum decided to retire, leaving a void to be filled. The congregation had a list of potential ministers, but Dr. Barnum was captivated by Rev. Frank Richelieu's message when he heard him speak at a Religious Science conference. As a result, Dr. Richelieu was chosen to succeed Dr. Barnum. Under the leadership of Drs. Frank and Anita Richelieu, who began their service in 1962, the church experienced remarkable growth. To accommodate the expanding congregation, architect Howard B. Van Heuklyn collaborated with Dr. Richelieu to envision the iconic structure that stands today. The new section, including the current Sanctuary and offices, was unveiled in 1973. Dr. Frank and Anita Richelieu served as Co-Pastors of the Redondo Beach Church of Religious Science for an impressive 38 years before retiring in October 2000. They had identified their successor, Dr. Moira Foxe, who assumed the pastoral role in October 2000. In 2008, the church celebrated its sixtieth year as a chartered church, even though it had been in existence for 61 years. Since 1954, the Redondo Beach Church of Religious Science has been affiliated with Religious Science International. In 2008, the church and another religious teaching organization called United Church of Religious Science made the decision to merge and adopt the name Centers for Spiritual Living. The official union of the two organizations occurred in February 2012, and the church is now known as the Redondo Beach Center for Spiritual Living. In June 2011, a Montessori School was established within the Center building, and it occupies the renovated Youth Center space on school days. The church is grateful for the opportunity to share their space with such a wonderful organization. Throughout its 75+ year history, the Redondo Beach Center for Spiritual Living has been a beacon of light in the community, offering life-changing philosophy rooted in Science of Mind teachings. The center provides a welcoming and loving church home for all who seek spiritual growth and aims to honor each individual, nurture their spirit, and enrich the lives of those it serves.

Membership Info To hold a membership means to belong to an organization and to have made a decision to join and participate in its activities. Being a member means to support and be supported by other members of the group; to give and to receive. At the Redondo Beach Center for Spiritual Living Our members join together in a loving, supportive environment to learn and practice the principles and teaching of Science of Mind. They join with like-minded individuals in groups and on special committees to share their talents and participate in the fellowship that results. There is power in making the commitment to join the center, for in doing so you express the spiritual vision to attain unlimited growth and expansion in your own personal life. As you commit your energies to gain further knowledge and practice the teachings of Science of Mind, you cannot help but be empowered to transform your life. Membership is open to all. There are two paths to complete the membership process. 1. We offer membership classes twice a year, called Discovery Classes. In these classes you discover the basics, the surface understanding of Science of Mind and what the Centers for Spiritual Living are about. 2. Being a student of Science of Mind classes, which are in session from September through the following May, is an alternate option and provides the second path to membership. Ernest Holmes is the founder of Religious Science whose spiritual philosophy is known as “The Science of Mind.” Born in 1887 in Lincoln, Maine, Ernest Holmes left his school and family at the age of 15 to move to Boston, Massachusetts, where he discovered Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health as well as Christian Science. In 1912, he relocated to Venice, California, joining his brother Fenwicke and immersing himself in the study of various influential writers such as Thomas Troward, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Walker Atkinson, and Christian D. Larson. Holmes married Hazel Durkee Foster in 1927, and following years of touring and speaking engagements, he settled in Los Angeles to complete his seminal work, The Science of Mind, which was published in 1926. Holmes founded the Institute of Religious Science and School of Philosophy, published Science of Mind magazine, and continually expanded his speaking venues. Over time, his organization underwent several name changes and is now known as The Centers for Spiritual Living. Holmes' teachings and philosophy continue to resonate, offering a profound spiritual path, insights into our connection with the Universe, and a joyful approach to daily living. Practitioners Finding Inspiration in Every Turn A Practitioner is a person of high spiritual consciousness and deep understanding, trained in the study of the Science of Mind and “Treatment.” Treatment is the art, science, and skill of Affirmative Prayer. Practitioners are dedicated to the cause of helping others, licensed to practice professionally, and bound by a high code of ethics to respect your privacy. A full appointment is more interactive with the practitioner in order to discover more about the belief that is causing disharmony. Each practitioner comes from a loving space of nonjudgment and confidentiality. What Is Affirmative Prayer? The use of Affirmative Prayer (sometimes referred to as a “Spiritual Mind Treatment” or just “Treatment”) in our daily lives gives us the privilege of choosing the direction of our thoughts, so we are in harmony with a Power greater than we are, and brings our experience out of the darkness of limitation. It is a very powerful tool used to change one’s thoughts, one’s beliefs, and one’s experiences in a positive way. Do I Need a Practitioner? Practitioners are dedicated to the cause of helping others, licensed to practice professionally, and bound by a high code of ethics to respect your privacy. Ask yourself the following questions: Am I too close to my own problem to see the situation clearly? Do I feel that something is blocking that which I am seeking? Do I feel that I lack the experience with, the training in, or the understanding of the Science of Mind principles necessary to resolve the difficulty? If any of these questions can be answered “Yes,” a Practitioner can be very beneficial and helpful to you. FAQs Once I decide to seek the services of a practitioner, what do I do next? When you have decided to seek the services of a Practitioner, you can help by trusting the process: Have faith in the Mind of God. It is Omnipotent and It does the work. Contemplate your challenge and get clear on what you want to accomplish in consciousness. Release your problem by giving it to your Practitioner. Be ready to move forward in consciousness and accept a healing. Endeavor to keep a positive attitude. Be expectant, accepting every good thing as part of your demonstration. Be thankful. Give thanks for the wonderful change that is taking place in your life. Do I need to be present in order for Affirmative Prayer to work? No. Affirmative Prayers are just as effective if the Practitioner is in your presence, on the telephone, or on the other side of the world. There is only One Mind: One Infinite Intelligence and that Mind is everywhere present. Can I do Affirmative Prayer for myself? Yes. The Practitioner will also assist you in the process and correct use of Affirmative Prayer. For example, the following simple Affirmative Prayer alone can raise your consciousness and your level of acceptance of good in your life, "There is One Universal Life, and I am unified with It. I declare that within this Divine Life, there is all that I need for a healthy, happy, prosperous life. I accept this good gladly, turning away from any appearance to the contrary. In deep gratitude I give thanks – I let go and let God. And so it is." After I receive the services of a practitioner, what can I do to assist in the manifestation of my good? Have faith in the healing power of the “Spirit within”. Use the Affirmative Prayer given to you by the Practitioner as many times as necessary every day. Focus on your desired outcome. Keep a positive attitude. Be grateful. Give heartfelt thanks, knowing the wonderful changes that are taking place in your life. Why is there a cost to work with a practitoner? Practitioners have taken at least 3 years of Science of Mind classes. They have done their own spiritual work and continue to invest in themselves. They are professionals and their experience, knowledge, skills, and time are valued. Recognize that treatment work is never withheld because of an inability to pay. Simply explain to the Practitioner, and ask for work in the area of prosperity so that you can start to heal that and be in a stable financial condition.
